Helping rural parents raise resilient, thriving kids.

PARENT CONSULTATION

Thinking it Through Together

This consultation is for parents of children and adolescents who are feeling concerned or uncertain about their child’s behaviour, emotions, learning, or wellbeing - but are unsure whether anything needs intervening.

It is particularly helpful for parents who:

Have a sense that “something isn’t quite sitting right”

Are unsure whether what they are seeing is part of typical development

Feel hesitant about jumping straight into therapy or assessment

Want professional guidance before deciding on next steps

  • How it can help

Parent Consultation offers a calm, structured space to make sense of concerns with a clinical psychologist.

    It can help parents:

➤ Understand their child’s behaviour in developmental and environmental context

➤ Differentiate between typical variation and areas that may benefit from support

    ➤ Reduce uncertainty and second-guessing

➤ Clarify whether no action, gentle support, therapy, or assessment is appropriate

➤ Feel less alone in their decision-making

For many families, this consultation provides reassurance and direction without the need for ongoing therapy.

  • What it involves

The session focuses on thoughtful discussion and professional guidance.

    It may include:

➤ Exploration of current concerns and patterns

➤ Consideration of developmental history and context

➤ Discussion of family, school, and environmental factors

➤ Gentle, practical suggestions where appropriate

➤ Clear feedback about whether further support is indicated

The aim is clarity and informed decision-making. Diagnoses will not be given at the end of the session/s, although diagnostic assessment may be offered/suggested as a potential outcome if appropriate.

  • What outcomes to expect

Following the consultation, parents can expect:

➤ Greater understanding of what may be happening

    ➤ Reduced anxiety around decision-making

➤ A clearer sense of whether any further action is needed

➤ Confidence in next steps (which may include no further intervention)

For some families, one session is sufficient. For others, the consultation may guide an additional Parent Consultation: Thinking it Through Together 60-minute session, future therapy sessions or assessment if clinically warranted.

Medicare rebates of $145.25 continue to apply per session where appropriate. Reach out to chat to our friendly admin, Tiana, to see if the Medicare rebate applies for your sessions.
